There’s a strange atmospheric phenomenon peculiar to our location halfway up the North-American coastline, something that has shaped the romantic atmosphere of San Francisco since the very moment that it truly became a city. poems have been written about it, as well as songs and stories, and I aim to celebrate it too. You’ve probably caught on by now… it’s the San Francisco fog.
It’s a vital component of what gives the city… well, how can I say it any more clearly: it’s an essential component of San Francisco’s “atmosphere”. From the spooky alleys of film noir to shivering bonfires on the beach, the fog defines this city.

Hi, Richard,
As I’ve mentioned, I work in one of the Embarcadero Center buildings. The view is spectacular, but one of the views I enjoy the most is no view at all. When the fog has come in and taken over, blocking even the nearest building from site. If I walk over to the window, I can look down and see the street. But from my seat behind the reception desk, a blanket of white is all that appears. It’s almost like I’m in a world all to myself for a short time.
One other time I enjoy the view is on a mostly sunny day, but a wall of fog is sneaking in over the Bay, promising to put a chill into the evening hours. I love watching as it glides across the water, hiding the hills of the East Bay.
